WHITEFISH, Mont. -- Riding On Insulin adds a familiar face from the diabetes world to its coaches team this season, welcoming Crystal Bowersox, a Nashville based singer/songwriter living with Type 1 diabetes, to train with the ROI team this December.
Bowersox will learn alongside ROI coaches in Breckenridge, Colorado for four days, and will coach on the mountain for ROI’s Colorado camp on Saturday, December 17.
The Northwest Ohio native first experienced an ROI camp last winter, and is excited to take on a bigger role with the organization. Bowersox, who will also coach at the first-ever Indiana/Ohio Camp on January 14, 2017, performed at an ROI fundraising event last January in Whitefish, Montana, and then volunteered on the mountain at the annual Montana ski/snowboard camp.
Bowersox rose to fame during the 2010 season of the hit television show American Idol, when she earned second place. Since then, Bowersox has produced multiple studio albums and toured around the country. Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age six, Crystal Bowersox understands what it’s like to be a child with diabetes. As an adult, she actively advocates for diabetes awareness and education.
“It’s a lonely disease as a kid, sometimes you feel like you’re the only one who has it,” she said. “I want people to know that they are not alone. I want people to know that it’s important to know how to care for their body. I am happy to be a voice for people with Type 1 diabetes. It brings joy to my world to be able to help people.”
Riding On Insulin is a non-profit organization based in Whitefish that provides an unforgettable experience for T1D skiers and snowboarders and their siblings. ROI hosts one-day camps in three countries and ten states, giving kids and teens battling a chronic disease the opportunity to learn a new sport and better manage their diabetes.
Type 1 Diabetes is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects 1.25 million Americans, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In those with T1D, the pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone necessary for survival and getting energy from food. Between only 5-10 percent of all diabetes cases in the United States are type 1, according to the JDRF (formerly Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).
Riding On Insulin’s coaching team consists of adult skiers and riders from across the U.S. and Canada who live with Type 1 diabetes.
Riding On Insulin is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2004, based in Whitefish, Montana. With ski and snowboard programs across the United States, Canada and New Zealand, ROI empowers, activates and connects the global diabetes community through shared experience and action sports. In addition to establishing a comfortable environment, the organization strives to help families explore new passions, challenge T1D, and celebrate each other’s successes.
